Following the tragic death of her husband Jason Rae, Corinne Bailey Rae did the only thing she could think to do. Continue to live and return back to the very thing that had always been her first love. Music. She had begun writing and recording songs for The Sea well before she experienced the loss of her husband and was shocked at how the songs seem to correlate with how she felt after the fact. Even when you listen to the tracks on the album you get a sense of grief along with a simultaneous washing of love at the same time. It’s like she was channeling into a place she knew existed but had never felt firsthand. Corinne’s album The Sea has be wildly acclaimed since it’s release and is without a doubt some of the best music we’ve heard from the UK’er. In this interview, she sits down with Ann Powers of the Los Angeles Times to talk about dealing with her grief, writing music, returning to it and why this album will take you on a musical ride of highs and lows through the unabashed waves in The Sea.
