If you know anything about classic jazz, then you know about Nina Simone. Her music was filled with controversy, awareness and passion. Most of all, her music made a lasting impression on our musical culture, which is just what music is supposed to do. Evoke emotion and make you think. “Strange Fruit” is one of her classics ( and one of my favorite songs by the diva) that Common samples in his track by the same name featuring John Legend.
Everything that we can expect from Common is all wrapped up into this these 3 minutes of musical genius. Couple his smooth lyrical delivery with that milky voice of his and you’ve got this track that’s been on repeat the last few minutes while I write this. I’m a big Common fan so it’s no surprise that I love this. The track was intended for Common’s Finding Forever album but didn’t make the cut. From the sound and the fact that it sports production by Kanye West, I’m not completely sure why this track didn’t make the final tracklist but it indeed is hot.
Classic rap with a twist. Gotta love that.
